Cost of goods sold = what the things you sold cost you (stock, materials, direct costs). Use the same period for every number. The prefilled numbers are a made-up worked example, not typical figures: replace them with your own.

How it works

Net sales = sales − refunds and discounts. Gross profit = net sales − cost of goods sold. Gross margin = gross profit ÷ net sales. Net profit = gross profit − operating expenses. Net margin = net profit ÷ net sales. Net profit here is before income tax: no tax is estimated.

Worked example (the values above): $12,500.00 of sales less $300.00 of refunds is $12,200.00 of net sales. Take off $4,200.00 cost of goods and the gross profit is $8,000.00, a 65.6% gross margin ($8,000.00 ÷ $12,200.00). Operating expenses are $1,200.00 + $2,400.00 + $450.00 + $180.00 + $620.00 = $4,850.00, so the net profit is $8,000.00 − $4,850.00 = $3,150.00, a 25.8% net margin ($3,150.00 ÷ $12,200.00).

If sales had been $9,000.00 with the same costs, net sales would be $8,700.00, gross profit $4,500.00 and the period would show a $350.00 loss (−4.0%). See the gross vs net profit margin calculator, the monthly expense budget and all calculators.
